Mount Vernon Trail detour opens July 1 for Long Bridge Project
The good news is that the Mount Vernon Trail will remain open throughout construction. The temporary bypass shifts trail users closer to the George Washington Memorial Parkway before reconnecting with the existing trail north and south of the work zone.

CSX train celebrating America's 250th makes stop at Alexandria Union Station
The train features two America 250 locomotives, two heritage units in original 1827 Baltimore & Ohio colors, and 10 historic executive business cars used for presidential movements, according to CSX. It left Alexandria’s Union Station shortly after 11 a.m., crossing the CSX Long Bridge over the Potomac River and arriving at Union Station in D.C.

Metro announces July 4 service plans
Metro is ready to move crowds for historic Fourth of July festivities in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States. Fares will be free systemwide from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Metro Rail service will increase starting at 5 p.m. to facilitate trips safely and efficiently.

Tracking Metro's summer 2026 Red Line closures
To keep riders moving, Metro says about 100 free shuttle buses will replace train service, running every five to eight minutes. Commuters should plan for an additional 20 to 25 minutes of travel time.

VRE buys Seminary Yard in Alexandria, a key cog in its plan to expand service
The VRE said Monday it purchased the property from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority, the entity that oversees Amtrak in Virginia, for $35.8 million. It is part of a five-year, $155 million deal between the two for the transfer of four separate properties.

The project features two overhead pantograph chargers capable of delivering charging speeds of up to 360 kilowatts. Unlike conventional depot charging systems that can require hours to recharge a bus, the on-route chargers are designed to recharge vehicles in minutes while they remain in service.

Metro awards $40M to replace aging fare machines
Metro awarded a contract of almost $40 million to Indra Group to design, supply and maintain up to 450 new, state-of-the-art "customer terminals," as they will be known, to replace the aging machines at all 98 stations. They are expected to be modern, accepting smartphone payments, providing helpful information on large screens and doing it in 15 languages.
