Since 1968, Pete’s Barber Shop has been an anchor of Arlington’s Westover neighborhood. Founded by Greek immigrant Peter Xereas, the classic shop has served generations of locals — from first haircuts in a highchair to traditional flat tops. Today, owner Khalid Salmi preserves that historic charm. Originally from Morocco, Khalid came to the US in 2009 and joined Pete’s after the original owner retired and ownership changed hands in 2014. With its vintage chairs and friendly chatter, Pete’s is more than a place for a haircut—it is a vibrant community spot where neighbors connect and swap stories on a busy weekend. There are six barbers with their swivel chairs and built-in wet stations for washing hair. And over a half-century later, the black-and-white tiled floor is still there as is the buzz of the clippers.

Beyond its cultural value, Pete’s Barber Shop plays a modern role in building a sustainable community. Tucked away on Washington Boulevard in historic Westover Village, its main storefront location is a prime example of transit-oriented neighborhood design. Because the shop is on a main artery (Washington Boulevard), clients don’t need to rely on a car to get a trim. “Our regulars love that they can just leave the car at home,” master barber Khalid Salmi notes. Some customers jog there from down the street and families ride their bikes to the shop. While others will hop off the local Metrobus right outside the front door. Pete’s Barber Shop is equidistant from East Falls Church and Ballston metro stations.
